Study Structure of General Medicine

Study Period of Medicine:

The study period for general medicine, often known as internal medicine, entails a thorough and drawn-out curriculum intended to produce qualified and well-rounded doctors. An undergraduate medical degree, such as an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), is usually the first step in the process. Depending on the nation and institution, this degree can be earned in five to six years. Along with beginning clinical training in several hospital departments, this phase entails thorough education in fundamental medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and biochemistry. Aspiring physicians are required to complete a one-year internship, commonly referred to as a house job, upon completion of the MBBS degree. This internship gives them hands-on training in a variety of medical disciplines, including internal medicine

Theoretical Knowledge:

During this time, students can apply their theoretical knowledge in supervised real-world hospital settings, which helps them gain experience with patients and acquire critical clinical skills. Those who want to specialize in general medicine must apply for a postgraduate training program after completing the internship successfully. Programs like FCPS (Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons) or MD (Doctor of Medicine) are used for this in various nations, including Pakistan. Internal medicine postgraduate training normally lasts four to five years. Residents go through rigorous clinical training and rotations in many medical specialties throughout this time. They treat a variety of adult health ailments, including infectious infections, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Long workdays, night shifts, emergency tasks, and ongoing evaluations are all part of the physically and emotionally taxing training. Residents are required to participate in frequent training sessions, seminars, and workshops in addition to their clinical responsibilities. In many programs, they also have to do a research thesis or dissertation and study for comprehensive tests

Trainees Learn:

Internal medicine trainees learn how to manage chronic disorders and provide long-term care during their postgraduate studies, in addition to diagnosing and treating a variety of illnesses. They frequently serve as the initial point of contact in the healthcare system and are educated to view the patient holistically, taking into account the interactions between various bodily systems. Doctors should graduate from the program with extensive knowledge, the ability to think critically, effective communication skills, and the ability to make wise medical decisions on their own. The doctor receives the general medicine specialization and is able to start working on their own as a consultant or specialist after completing the program and passing all exams. From the first year of medical school to the final accreditation as a specialist, the entire study and training period in general medicine lasts between 10 and 12 years. The route offers the chance to significantly influence patient treatment and community health, despite being lengthy and taxing.
